Multiply by 2.54 — an exact definition rather than an approximation.

If you are converting a fractional measurement, convert the fraction first: 3½ inches is 3.5, and ⅜ is 0.375. The converter accepts decimals, not fractions, because a text box that tries to parse "3 3/8" gets it wrong often enough to be worse than useless.
