Barcode label maker
One value per line, or paste a CSV and pick the column. Every value is checked before anything is drawn, so a bad check digit is caught here and not on the shelf.
The barcodes and the PDF are made in your browser. Your list is never uploaded, which matters when it is a price list or an asset register.
Which barcode type to choose
| Type | Holds | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Code 128 | Any printable ASCII text | Stock and asset tags, shipping references: the safe default inside your own business |
| Code 39 | Capitals, digits and - . $ / + % space |
Older scanners and systems that ask for it by name |
| EAN-13 | 12 digits plus a check digit | Retail products outside North America; the number must come from GS1 |
| UPC-A | 11 digits plus a check digit | Retail products in North America; the number must come from GS1 |
| ITF-14 | 13 digits plus a check digit | Outer cartons of a GS1-numbered product |
| Data Matrix | Up to 1,500 characters | Small parts, URLs, serial numbers where a linear code will not fit |
EAN-13, UPC-A and ITF-14 numbers are not something to make up: a retailer's system looks them up in GS1's registry. For your own stock, use Code 128, which carries letters and has no registry.
How to print labels that line up
- Print a test page on plain paper first. Hold it against a label sheet up to a window or a light. If the codes sit inside the labels, print the real sheet.
- Print at 100% or "Actual size". "Fit to page" shrinks the whole sheet by a few percent, which walks the bottom rows off their labels.
- Re-using a part-used sheet? Set "Skip used labels" to the number already peeled off, counting across each row from the top left.
- Scan one before printing a hundred. Any phone camera scanner, or this site's barcode scanner, will read a code off the screen or off the test page.
Every code is drawn with a margin inside its label, so a printer that feeds a fraction off true still prints the whole code. The sheet sizes are Avery's own, from its published templates.
Check digits
The last digit of an EAN-13, UPC-A or ITF-14 number is calculated from the others, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. Enter the number without it and the tool adds it; enter it with one and the tool checks it and names the right digit if it is wrong.
