Local LLM vs. API: Benchmarking LM Studio for Dev Tasks
The question worth actually measuring
"Just use the API model, it's better" is true and also not the useful question. The useful question is which of your everyday tasks actually need that quality gap, because a local model costs nothing per call and never leaves your machine. Guessing wastes either money or quality. Measuring takes twenty minutes.
A benchmark that fits in an afternoon
Pick five to ten tasks you actually do in a normal week -- writing a commit message from a diff, summarizing a log file, generating a regex, explaining an error message, drafting a docstring. Run each one through a local model loaded in LM Studio and through the API model you'd otherwise reach for. Don't judge on vibes; judge on whether the output needed an edit before you'd use it, and how big that edit was.
Where the gap actually shows up
In practice the gap is narrower than expected on short, well-specified, single-file tasks -- explaining an error, writing a regex, a commit message -- and wide on anything requiring multi-file context or genuinely novel reasoning. A 7-13B local model handles the first category about as well as a flagship API model, most of the time. It falls apart fast on the second.
What this actually buys you
Every task in the first category run locally instead of through an API is a call that costs nothing, has no rate limit, and never leaves your machine -- worth doing by default once you've confirmed the quality holds for your own tasks, not someone else's benchmark. Route only the harder category to the model that's actually earning its cost, and the everyday, high-volume stuff runs free.
